Our vision is to develop and deploy a modular robotic system for environmental monitoring in remote and rugged regions. RANGER is an acronym for Robotic Autonomous Navigator for Geospatial Environmental Reconnaissance. This project addresses the critical need for verifiable data that conventional monitoring methods often fail to provide. By combining autonomous navigation with real-time data analysis, RANGER aims to provide objective, actionable intelligence for environmental assessment and advocacy.
The RANGER platform is engineered on a robust 6-wheel-drive chassis for superior off-road mobility. Its core is a dual-processor architecture with an Arduino-based microcontroller for sensor data acquisition and a Raspberry Pi for autonomous navigation. The navigation system uses a ROS-based VIO/VSLAM subsystem that fuses data from an IMU, visual odometry, and GPS, ensuring continuous pose estimation. Communication to the web-based dashboard is achieved via Wi-Fi and an optional LoRa backup. The system's modular hardware architecture enables rapid sensor payload changes, with components being 3D-printed for field-deployable ruggedization against dust and moisture.
