Project Overview

Date: March 2025

Category: Robotics, Embedded Engineering, Particle Physics

The Hidden Crisis Beneath Our Feet In the remote landscapes of Northern Kenya, whispers of an invisible threat have echoed for decades. Since the 1990s, communities in Marsabit and neighboring regions have raised alarms over mysterious illnesses, livestock deaths, and strange substances buried deep in the earth. Allegations of toxic waste dumping — linked to oil exploration and offshore shipments — have remained unanswered, leaving locals grappling with uncertainty, fear, and a demand for justice. A turning point came in 2000, when 7,000 livestock perished after drinking from a borehole near a suspiciously drilled pit. Subsequent investigations by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and local leaders pointed to groundwater contamination. Still, many questions remain unanswered.

How do we uncover the truth in a harsh, isolated terrain where traditional investigation methods fall short?

Meet RANGER

Radiation Assessment and Navigation for Geographic Environmental Reconnaissance R.A.N.G.E.R. is more than just a robot — it’s a mission. A semi-autonomous environmental surveyor built for the rough and rugged Marsabit landscape, RANGER is designed to detect and map ionizing radiation with precision. It is a beacon of hope for communities seeking answers and justice. At its core, RANGER is about three things: ✔️ Truth — uncovering hidden dangers beneath the surface ✔️ Justice — arming communities with data to advocate for action ✔️ Innovation — using African-born technology to solve African problems

Our Process

R.A.N.G.E.R. (Radiation Assessment and Navigation for Geographic Environmental Reconnaissance) is a semi-autonomous robotic system designed to uncover hidden radiation threats in Northern Kenya’s harsh and remote terrain. Built on a rugged 6-wheel-drive chassis for superior off-road performance, RANGER integrates a powerful suite of sensors including a Geiger-Müller tube for detecting ionizing radiation, a GPS module for precise geolocation, and an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) for stable navigation. At its core, a microcontroller processes real-time data from these sensors, allowing RANGER to map radiation levels across suspected contamination zones with high accuracy. Controlled via a FlySky FS-i6X system, the robot offers both manual and semi-autonomous operation modes, making it adaptable to dynamic environments. The collected radiation data is synchronized with geographic coordinates to generate a visual radiation map—an essential tool for environmental agencies and communities advocating for justice and remediation. With each mission, RANGER transforms invisible threats into visible data, empowering affected communities with knowledge and driving evidence-based action.
